Best Puzzle Game (1/13/02)

Vid Grid

This is a close but Vid Grid is the winner with Flip Out being a close second. Both games are excellent but don’t take my word for it.Some of the comments:
Vid Grid “I found it easy to start…it got harder…normally I stop playing when it’s too hard, here I just carried on trying harder. Amazing gameplay, decent resolution videos, cheesy Van Halen video, it’s all there.
Plus I only own this and Myst of the four, and it took about a minute to see I wasn’t gonna play Myst in a loooooong time ;)”
Stone”
Flip Out “I choose ‘Flip Out!’ because it has the makings of a very good puzzle game. Matching the tiles is not the only thing you have to do…you have to learn the behavior of the various aliens. And the amount of levels in this game is frickin’ HUGE! Not only do you flip tiles, you also flip pieces of Mount Rushmore, and you also flip food items in the diner level. The graphics in the game are simply gorgeous. The music is good and not too annoying, and the sound FX sound pretty realistic (applause when you win a level, groans when you lose a level, the laugh of the scorekeeper, and the “YEE HAW!” of the cowboy alien). Controls are tight and responsive. A winner!”

Best Strategy Game (4/16/01)

Worms

Worms is a winner by a landslide!  It also is in the running for the best Jaguar game ever.  The second place was a tie between Cannon Fodder and Attack of the Mutant Penguins.  Syndicate also had some support.

Some of the Comments:
Worms “It’s the only action/strategy Jag game I own:)”

“What’s more fun than blowing up your buddy in a good game of Worms? Gotta love it =) AMP came in a close second for me.”

“One of the best games for the Jaguar, period, WORMS barely takes the top spot of the strategy heap on Jaguar. One of the few Jaguar games that yells ‘PARTY,’ the unique blend of strategic gameplay and 2D graphics, not to mention a humor all its own, makes for a gaming experience rarely seen by others in the genre.”

“A very, very well done game. Too bad Atari didn’t make it an exclusive like they should’ve. Oh well, one can dream…”

“Killer graphics, intense gameplay, and all around the best game for the Jag!”

Attack of the Mutant Penguins “Original, fun, great graphics, great game. Only thing it needs is some in game music. Just edges out Cannon Fodder.”

Cannon Fodder “Good graphics extremely challenging and a hell of a lot of fun it kept my cussing for hours.”

“Cannon Fodder is just brilliant fun! It is very hard as I like it. It’s a great killing fest. It is very long and original. The only problem is the bugs…. The game may crash completely while on the between-levels screen. Still the game is a winner. It even has a very funny intro song…”

Syndicate “No other of the listed games makes you so addicted to play for hours and hours without stopping. Attack of the Mutant Penguins is too short. Theme park doesn’t let you save. This two would have had a hard fight with syndicate, but in the end for me syndicate wins…”

Best Fighting Game (11/25/00)

Ultra Vortek

Ultra Vortek is the winner!  Fight For Life came in second and even Double Dragon V got a vote (that must have been a joke!) Kasumi Ninja came in third while Primal Rage and Bruce Lee also got a vote.

Some of the Comments:

Ultra Vortek “Hands down, the fighter to own on the Jag. Great gameplay,
tight graphics and a rockin soundtrack. It’s obvious Beyond Games
put a lot of work into this game.”

“This game has good graphics, and cool characters. I have chosen this game because Kasumi Ninja control sucks, Fight for Life graphics are too plain, Primal Rage has stupid characters, and Double Dragon 5 and Dragon (Bruce Lee) looks like an old Commodore 64 game”

“Because all the rest of the fighting games on the Jaguar suck royally though primal rage is a good conversion of the arcade hit the arcade version was not that good anyways. Kasumi Ninja is unplayable and so is Dragon when you play both of these games it’s like you are just watching and not in control. Double Dragon is so bad it’s embarrassing and the developers should be dragged out of there homes and beaten with burning pointy sticks. As for Fight for Life hmmm he could have finished it before releasing it though it looks really nice and you can zoom in and out of the action it just seems though your playing a beta version of the game.”

Fight For Life “A lot of people think it isn’t any good, but it has great high res texture mapping, fantastic hard-driven’ tunes, and although it is slightly sluggish, it is smooth, true 3-d movement (not like Virtua Fighter which looks 3d but moves two dimensionally) and a lot of great combos, custom moves, and the ability to combine combos and custom moves into near limitless chain moves. This game Was the first true 3d-side stepping/dodging game. plus instant replay options and moving or static camera, this game has it all. My one complaint is poorly texture mapped rings (floors). Ultra Vortek is a close second but 2d is to two dimensional in a 3d video world.”

“The fact you can acquire two moves from your defeated opponent is ingenious. To this day I cannot find this element on any other game on any other system.”

Kasumi Ninja “The game is fast and fun! A real winner!”

“Kasumi is the prettiest fighting games, the fatalities are well done, and the background is the most impressive.”

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story “Most definitely the best fighter for the jaguar (that’s listed) is Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. It had an addictive rhythm to the game with nice graphics. Kasumi Ninja had laughable characters and graphics. Primal Rage was boring, Double Dragon is old, and Ultra Vortek was just not very intriguing.”

Best Driving Game (5/17/00)

Power Drive Rally

Power Drive Rally wins by a nose, but that is enough.  Votes were also given for a close second Super Burnout, and lastly, World Tour Racing. Not surprisingly no votes were cast for Checkered Flag. Surprisingly no votes were cast for Atari Karts.

Some of the comments:
Power Drive Rally “I chose Power Drive Rally because its addicting. I find the game addicting because it has a good track layout and the game has skill tests.”

“I don’t have atari karts yet…so pdr is the best i’ve played… it’s fun, though you can’t play 2 players at the same time…”

Super Burnout “1. Control 2. Excitement heart pounding 3. Graphics.”

“60 frames per second sonic speed that is still the fastest motorcycle game to date. 2 player, no slowdown. great gfx. lots of tracks. speed enducing hills. smooth, smooth, smooth. It’s motorcycles, what’s not to love?”

World Tour Racing “It was a tough choice, but WTR comes out on top for me because it’s just a hellofa lot of fun to play. It’s the only Jag driving game that I’ve played all the way through and enjoy playing it as much now as the first time I played. Good control, decent graphics and a kickin soundtrack add up to just plain fun.”

Best Sports Game (2/15/00)

NBA JAMS

Val D’ Isere Skiing

What, a tie!  Well that is the way it goes I suppose.  Votes were also given for Brutal Sports Football, and International Sensible Soccer.  Believe it or not even an unreleased game, Brett Hull Hockey, ended up getting two votes.

Here are some of the comments submitted:

NBA Jams “4-player support, awesome graphics and audio.”, “not only the best sports game on the Jaguar but  the best port of NBA Jam TE on any system including the Playstation port.”

Val D’ Isere Skiing “One word. Fun. This game is just plain fun. It has some pretty smooth 2D graphics too. It may not look as good as the new Snowboarding games but this one isn’t just all about doing tricks. It has some good replay value as well. There are a lot of different courses and options.”

Brett Hull Hockey “Because it is actually the best of all the sports games. It is too bad the game never got released. With all the options, camera angles, and very smart AI it has the most replay value of any Jaguar sports game period.”
Brutal Sports Football “decapitation, replay value”
International Sensible Soccer “I love footy and this is the most accurate”
